327 installed 3 questions

327 is in, has been in the 76 nova for a few days, Starting hooking up everything and ran into a few snags. Wondered if anyone had experience with any of the given problems.

Throttle bracket it a bit off. My kick down won't slip over the knob and slide back and forth on the carb, and comes out way too far for the edelbrock as well. What I have done is took it slipped the bigger open section of the kick down over the carb knob, and put a clip behind it. It won't slide back and forth so when I give it gas it will probably kick down. I'll see how that works, I had to zip tie it to the back of the bracket, it is about half inch behind the hole it should be to compensate for the extra length. Not too worried about it moving, and it doesn't look bad, you can't see it's zip tied the way I did it. Little worried about the kick down engaging everytime I put the peddle down. It fit tight on the 305 just the same so I'll see how this plays out, I'm fairly happy with it.

The throttle cable is good, but the return spring didn't have enough pull to bring it back when I let go the gas pedal, it left it about a 1/4 of the way open. I pulled the spring tight and attached it to the back of the bracket (where it was on my 305 as well) So hopefully that fixes the pull back. It is one of those double spring, chromed, after market beauts.

I was thinking about getting an adjustable bracket. I've two opinons given to me on this. One friend (his car is a trialer queen) loves it. Another friend has one on his pick up and hates it. He hates it due to the fact it; wiggles loose and adjusts itself, is ugly as sin, and didn't fit his 355 right and put his cables at an angel so they bound every once in a while. He told me to leave mine on and make adjustments as I already have.

Anyone else have an opinion on these adjustable brackets ?

Second, when putting the engine in, I found out today due to the huge puddle of tranny fluid under the car, we bent the tranny tube and kinked it so the base of it that attaches to the tranny isn't straight in it, it is at a slight angel. The tube itself isn't leaking, or kinked shut, just letting leak around the base of the tube.

I put a layer of marine epoxy around it and glopped all around it with some sealer, high heat, temp, ect . . . stuff don't want to promote the brand. I am going to put a second coat around it tomorrow.

Anyone have a similar situation they've fixed? Or a good tube that goes around the engine instead of behind the block ?

Lastly my power steering pump, new one, woulcn't fit my steering box. It's lines had a wicked turn in it, went to the auto parts store, all of the lines where like that, broke one trying to bend it (they don't bend too well) so after frustration and closing times at all the auto part store I took one and cut it off, I then put an two inch long section of high pressure fuel injection hose on it. Gave it the slight turn and length I needed to hook it up.

So I started it, sounded great through the glass packs. Almost killed myself when I realized hey I got to open the garage doors to do this. Got in and rev'ed it. This is when I found out my return spring didn't come all the way back. I heard a pop and though the worst. Turn it off to access the damage The power steering pump had blown the further end out of it's metal hose out of the coupling. I thought it would blow the hose apart if anything, but didn't, shot the end of the metal line into my radiator housing. I looked at the end, it was very smooth, so I took the file and roughed the end up, slapped some magic sealer around it and placed it back into the coupling and tightened the clamp down.

I couldn't find one for the life of me (car, truck, or van) that would fit to my steering box from my pump unless it curved up so much it would meet my fan in a bad way.

Been waiting for the stuff on the tranny to dry and the power steering hose, so haven't started it, any one else have a problem with power steering hoses like this ?

I'll see how my fixes go tomorrow, no work this weekend is great.

Thanks,

Brandon

re: 327 installed 3 questions

I guess you have a TH350 tranny. If so, you have to adjust that kick down cable so that it runs out of slot some before wide open throttle. You want it to have just enough room to kick down before the pedal hits the carpet. You may have to move the bracket back and then adjust the length of the cable to make that happen. You should have one of those little brass cylinders with a hole for the cable and a screw to tighten in the hole. If you don't have one the parts house will. Good luck.

re: 327 installed 3 questions

The high pressure fuel injector hose works wonders to fix a needed bend in the power steering pump. The goop sealant I used sealed the tranny leak. Adjustable brackets do suck and excellent at being in the wrong spot, I wil stick to my zip ties.
