The best thing to do is remove the old seal and take it with you to the auto parts store. The seal will probably have a number on it somewhere that can be crossed over to the brand of seal that they sell.

Thanks for the numbers. I would guess that the shafts are 28 spline but I'm not 100% sure. The rear was from an RX7 but the engine isn't there and it's not posi. This was when the Cougars were full size like the TBirds at that time. I cleaned the tag and gave it a coat of paint to better read the numbers. I think the first set is WE(or 8)B. Any way I will check with the local NAPA and see what I can get. I just hate to tear it down and not be able to put it right back together.

In all likelihood, the tag actually reads "WEB-AD", not -4D.

Actually the seal's will be in the axle tube. The Brg style with the seal behind the Brg is the A20 Brg with the 3195 seal.

 

Both of those seals have the same OD. So you could also ID the seal by measurement of where the seal rides on the axle.

I believe the 1.5" ID seal is for the 31 spline axle, so the National #9569S should be correct for the OP's application.

 

If it does have the tapered roller bearings then do not install the seal in the housing. This will cause the bearing to burn up very quickly. The sealed ball bearing is the only one that uses the seal in the housing. The tapered roller bearing requires oil from the rear end for lube.

That tapered roller brg, with the seal that mounted right up on the bearing didn't arrive on the scene until 1974, IIRC.

Being that I was a Ford Partsman from 1979 to 1993, I can say that Henry drove us all crazy with this crap!

Anyway ... ALL of these bearing styles used a pressed-on
bearing retainer, so have a look in the box to make sure you have a new one.

 

I believe the 1.5" ID seal is for the 31 spline axle, so the National #9569S should be correct for the OP's application.
